Ants: Acromyrmex octospinosus

Acromyrmex octospinosus
Acromyrmex octospinosus

Upon purchase you will receive a colony of approximately 50-100 workers and one queen. we estimate the queens are a year old and should live for 12-15 years along with the colony. The colony size of this species is substantially smaller than other leaf cutting ant species, the fungus is currently the size of a golf ball and at its maximum the colony will have two fungus gardens around the size of two rugby balls. This makes them much easier to care for in captivity as they don't require a huge amount of space.

Care Sheet

The ants themselves do not require food but leaves must be offered daily which the ants will harvest and feed to the fungus garden. Most leaves will be accepted and its worth trying as many different leaves as possible however, never use pine or anything treated with fungicides or pesticides. For housing, we would recommend keeping the ants in an enclosure within an enclosure and in the larger enclosure have several inches of water which will act as a moat and prevent escapes. the water should be kept at around 26-28 degrees to create an ambient humidity. The enclosure containing the ants should have soil, peat free compost works well, and the ants should be kept between 23-26 degrees. Any other questions please contact us.
